Itachi is the top member of the seceret organisation Akatsuki. When Itachi was 13 he killed his entire family perposly to "test his strength". Only leaving his little brother Sasuke alive as aparently he wasn't "worth" killing (we now know the true reason why but I'de prefer if people read the manga chapters themselves. More fun that way). After the killings he revealed to Sasuke the truth about the rumors of Shisui's suicide stating that he had killed him to obtain the Mangekyo Sharingon. He then states to Sasuke that if he wan't revenge he must spend his entire life hating him and obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan.
Itachi is surprisingly unconfortable and unbloodthirsty when it comes to fighting and prefers to avoid as many fights as possible. Itachi mainly uses ninjutsu and genjutsu during battle, both of which are augmented by his Mangekyo Sharingan. Itachi's Mangekyo also lets him use Amaterasu, a jutsu which creates black flames that are hotter than the sun and can penetrate any barrier. Itachi is vertualy immune to his opponents genjutsu and can win most fights. He can also use Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu which traps his opponent in an ilussionary world, were he can torture them for hours on end all in a blink of an eye.
